Technology Hypnosis

In today's day and age, the use of technology has evolved so rapidly and so severely that it is almost impossible to escape it or to be without it. Although technology has greatly improved the way of life, allowed for better communication across the globe, and further evolution regarding innovations and creations, there are plenty of negative side effects that are increasingly affecting our newer generations. Increased screen time and extreme overconsumption of devices can lead to many mental, physical, and physiological effects. Within the last couple generations, (those who have experienced the evolution of technology the most vividly and accurately), an increase in the use of technology has had great effects on the minds of teenagers and young adults.

Firstly, some simple physical/physiological effects of overconsumption of technology or constant interaction with technology include things like headaches, eye strain, neck strain, back strain, migraines, brain fog, etc, things that can result from the blue light of a screen. Also, the popularity of being on a screen so often affects the body by giving it less physical activity, a result from the convenience and desire to simply lay in bed and scroll.

Some of the more severe effects of increased use of technology and over consumption of technology are mental effects. They include things like distorted body image, body dysmorphia, mental issues regarding unrealistic standards, seeing posts and stories that send dopamine boosts to the brain, which can negatively affect a person and have great effects on their tired or fragile mind. Being on a phone constantly also affects our attention spans and our ability to properly receive and release dopamine signals in a healthy way. Seeing short videos such as on Tiktok, or Instagram, make our attention span shorter as they condense the time that we are able to fully focus on one thing and find entertainment from it. As we keep scrolling and scrolling and watching these videos that might get shorter and shorter we are ruining our ability to stay focused on one subject for a long period of time. This, in turn, affects our mental capacity, overall intelligence, mental abilities, good speech, coherent thoughts, the choice to actively educate ourselves outside of school, etc. These mental and physical effects, which can in turn lead to physiological effects, are greatly affecting how our generation perceives our surroundings, how we respond to events, how we respond to social cues, and how we interact with society and our individual communities as a whole.

The danger and significance of these problems is how it changes and manipulates our mindsets, especially the mindsets of younger persons and vulnerable teenagers. The increasing lack of compassion and empathy and the increasing rise of apathy and carelessness and aloofness within our society and within every aspect of our modern world is constantly affecting the lives and minds of younger persons and every generation. As we all come to perceive and interact with technology in different ways, each level of interaction and perception includes inescapable negative and harmful side effects.

As technology continues to evolve, there's no doubt that our consumption of media and our addiction with media, and every nuance within media and technology, will increase as well. While technology has done great things for the globe and has saved lives, the way we are abusing it is only going to continue to negatively increase our younger generations and our world.
